NZE141 vs NZE161 vs NKE165 Gearbox Differences
The NZE141 uses Toyota's U340E 4-speed automatic or a C50 5-speed manual paired with the 1NZ-FE engine. The NZE161 uses the K310 Super CVT+ unit which gives smoother acceleration and better fuel economy but requires CVT-specific fluid and different servicing. The NKE165 hybrid pairs its 1NZ-FXE Atkinson cycle engine with a P410 transaxle that integrates the motor-generator unit — this gearbox is unique to the hybrid and will not fit or function in a non-hybrid Axio under any circumstances.
- NZE141: U340E 4-speed automatic OR C50 5-speed manual (1NZ-FE engine)
- NZE161: K310 Super CVT+ automatic (1NZ-FE engine, updated)
- NKE165: P410 hybrid transaxle with MG unit (1NZ-FXE engine) — hybrid only
- Manual NZE141 gearbox will NOT fit NZE161
- NKE165 gearbox is completely unique — no cross-fit with petrol models
Symptoms of a Failing Axio Gearbox
An automatic NZE141 that is slipping will feel like the engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate to match — especially noticeable pulling away from traffic lights. No reverse is a serious solenoid or hydraulic failure and the gearbox needs to come out. CVT units on the NZE161 show their wear through shuddering at low speed (under 20 km/h), hesitation when accelerating from a stop, and a whining noise from the transmission tunnel. Any of these symptoms means it is time to check the fluid condition first, then decide if the gearbox needs replacing.
- Slipping: engine revs but car does not accelerate properly
- No reverse or loss of a gear range
- Shuddering or juddering at low speed (CVT)
- Whining or growling noise from the gearbox
- Check engine light with transmission-related codes (P0700 series)
What to Check on a Used Gearbox Before Buying
Pull the dipstick and check the fluid. For the NZE141 auto it should be pink/red and not burnt-smelling. For the NZE161 CVT it should be clear pink Toyota CVT fluid — dark brown or burnt CVT fluid means the unit was run dry or overheated, which destroys the belt and pulleys. Check that the solenoids are included with the gearbox — buying a bare gearbox without the solenoid block means extra cost. Confirm the range selector (PRND2L) clicks through all positions cleanly. Ask ZT Auto whether the unit came from a low-mileage JDM import or a locally run car.
Why the NKE165 Hybrid Gearbox Needs Special Handling
The NKE165 transaxle contains high-voltage components connected to the hybrid battery pack. Before any work on the hybrid gearbox, the high-voltage system must be disabled using the service plug under the rear seat — ignoring this is a serious safety risk. Mechanics who are not familiar with Toyota hybrid systems should not attempt a hybrid gearbox swap. Make sure you discuss this with your mechanic before ordering the part, and confirm with ZT Auto that the replacement unit includes the MG unit if yours is damaged.
What Information to Send ZT Auto
When you contact us for a gearbox, give us: the full chassis code (NZE141, NZE161 or NKE165 — found on the door sticker or dash plate), the year, whether the car is automatic, manual or CVT, and your current mileage if you know it. If you have OBD codes from the gearbox, send those too — they help us identify whether the solenoids, valve body, or full gearbox unit is what you need.
