E12 vs HE12 — What's the Difference?

The standard E12 runs the HR12DE 1.2L naturally aspirated engine and is available in normal and NISMO trim. The NISMO models have a different front bumper, side skirts and rear valance — body panels from a standard E12 will not match the NISMO fitment. The HE12 is the e-POWER hybrid variant introduced around 2016 — it uses the same HR12DE engine but only as a generator; the wheels are driven entirely by an electric motor. The HE12 has a different front face, different rear bumper and completely different drivetrain components under the bonnet.

  • E12 standard: HR12DE engine, conventional Jatco CVT drivetrain
  • E12 NISMO: HR12DE, body kit different from standard — bumpers and skirts do not cross
  • HE12 e-POWER hybrid: HR12DE as generator only, electric rear drive unit
  • Body panels: E12 standard and HE12 differ — confirm trim before ordering
  • Mechanical running gear: most suspension parts cross between E12 and HE12

Most Requested E12 Parts at ZT Auto

The parts we get called about most for the Note E12 in Jamaica are headlights (the plastic lens yellows and cracks over time in our climate), front bumpers and bonnets after accidents, radiators, lower control arms (the front left takes the worst hits from potholes), and CV joints on both sides. Doors are also frequently requested — make sure to specify the year and colour when asking for a door, as the shade of paint on JDM imports can vary from locally delivered units.

  • Headlights (yellowing/cracking lens common)
  • Front and rear bumpers
  • Bonnets
  • Doors (specify year, side and colour)
  • Radiators
  • Front lower control arms
  • CV joints (inner and outer — specify side)
  • Tail lights

HR12DE vs HR12DDT — Which Parts Cross?

Some E12 models sold in other markets used the HR12DDT turbocharged engine, but the cars registered in Jamaica are overwhelmingly HR12DE naturally aspirated. The engine block and accessories are largely different between the two — turbo-specific parts like the intercooler, BOV, and turbocharger itself obviously do not cross, but external body parts, suspension and brake components are shared across the chassis regardless of which engine is fitted.

Common Nissan Note E12 Problems in Jamaica

The most frequent complaints we hear from E12 owners in Jamaica are: headlight lens fading and cracking (a UV issue that hits plastic lenses hard in our climate), front lower control arm wear from pothole impacts, CVT hesitation and shuddering on the Note's Jatco CVT (especially after the fluid has not been changed), and minor oil seeps from the HR12DE valve cover gasket. None of these are major failures, but left unattended they can develop into more expensive problems.

  • Headlight lens yellowing and UV cracking
  • Front lower control arm wear from road conditions
  • Jatco CVT shuddering (fluid change often resolves early symptoms)
  • Valve cover gasket seep on HR12DE
  • Wheel arch rust on older units

What to Send When Asking for Parts

The Nissan Note chassis sticker is on the driver's door frame — look for a white label that shows the full chassis number starting with E12 or HE12. The dash VIN plate (visible through the bottom of the windscreen on the driver's side) shows the same number. When you WhatsApp ZT Auto at 876-204-0258, send us the chassis code, the year, and for body parts, the colour code (also on the door sticker). For a quicker response, send a photo of the chassis sticker itself.
